About us and who we are :

GAST was set up by Move-More-Glossop lead Helen Thornhill to essentially create and promote healthier and more sustainable ways of getting around, by working for better public transport, and for routes that can be used to walk and wheel easily and safely.

The team encompasses all modes of transport. Each distinctly different mode has it`s own sub group, each with it`s own specialist guide.

Off-road routes.

There is an `off-road` route chosen that runs between Shirebrook Pk and Hadfield, which has also been evaluated by Sustrans/CWW. There is work to do, to bring the route to today`s disabled friendly standards, but most of the path is already available to use.

We are aiming to work with various bodies to open up paths between Simmondley & Glossop Rd, and looking to establish monies to take that plan further.

We have members that will look at paths from a disabled users` angle, and make them passable by horses and small vehicles.

Cycling & riding.

Apart from looking at the accessibility of routes, and referring small repairs and alterations, the team also looks at how people should get about. What type of bicycle would work in what situation ? One of the team could suggest an e-bike, or even an e-cargo-bike for shops with lots of small deliveries. The team also look at cycle parking and storage schemes, and are actively looking at a cafe parklet for cyclists visiting Glossop.

We will always aim to make any footpaths that we are actively looking at accessible for horse riders. We do not have a plan for stabling horses in and around Glossop, so please do suggest something via our email or forms.

Managing road traffic.

We do not wish to mimic Greta Thumberg, but high volumes of local traffic (no more than 5 miles per journey) is clogging up our local system. This also raises the amount of local pollution from road vehicles (by volume or queues) to a point that roadside footways are dangerous to people walking. There are other dangers from vehicles, mainly by vehicles travelling or parking along the footway. This either pushes footway users into the road, or into someone`s garden if a vehicle mounts the kerb at short notice.

We understand that vehicles can use the footway to make room for a passing vehicle. This keeps the road moving in the short term, but a more thought out plan is required. So this is one area that we are constantly actively looking at. We intend to work with residents, schools, work places and community groups to reach a workable solution.

We have worked in Tintwistle to see the introduction of a new speed limit, and appropriate speed reduction signage. we are now working to look at the flow of traffic around some of Glossop`s schools, especially along Pike`s Lane, that already has high levels of residential parking. We have already visited various Glossop schools to engage with children about all things traffic.

Public Transport.

There is a sister website at www.ptfg.info with information on our current routes and fares. We are actively looking at adding extra evening and Sunday services between Hayfield, Glossop, Gamesley and Charlesworth.

We are also working with local schools to provide tools to children and parents to connect them to local transport provision. Glossopdale College has an excellent Home to School page on it`s website, created by one of our team. we are looking to extend this to other schools.

We are also looking at better layouts for trains, new and better services, and better connectivity. A lot of this unfortunately is at Government level, but we will continue to press elected bodies to reach our aims.

Car club by Enterprise.

We are working with HPBC and Enterprise rental to provide a club subscription style car rental service for those who wish to drive, but have no continual use for their own vehicle. Things are moving along in setting this up. Keep checking the car club page regularly !
